UNIÓN DE ORGANIZACIONES DE PRODUCTORES DE CACAO ARRIBA ESMERALDAS, “UOPROCAE”

THE CO-OP

The Unión de Organizaciones de Productores de Cacao Arriba Esmeraldas (UOPROCAE) was formed in 2014. It is made up of seven main organizations. They have 394 cacao producers with 1,204 hectars of productive farm land that yields 318 metric tons of fine aroma cacao yearly. A portion of that yield is certified organic or biodynamic. One of the main organizations that form part of the UOPROCAE is The Asociación de Productores de Cacao Orgánico del Cantón Atacames (APROCA). This organization of 125 affiliates provides personal training to their producers and their family members. They also organize administrative internships for young people at their collection sites.

THE PROVINCE

Esmeraldas is a coastal city in northwestern Ecuador. It is the seat of the Esmeraldas Canton and capital of the Esmeraldas Province. It is also the main seaport of northwestern Ecuador which lies on the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Esmeraldas River. The city is the principal trading hub for the region’s agricultural and lumber resources. The soil in that region allows the production of rice, maize, African Palm, and a variety of tropical fruits. Among the main forest species are: chanul, raft, laurel, sande, guayacán, and tangaré. The fishing industry is also an important economic indicator of the region, and includes species like corvina, snapper, lisa and tuna.
